News Summary

So the cat is out of the bag. Naya Pakistan is before us. And boy is it ugly? Uglier than a mad man’s dream. Our revolutionaries have brought us on our knees. But why complain? Fatalist as I have become, I am convinced that this is our luck. But let us just not go there. Perhaps, people are unaware of the full extent of the disaster being averted. And yet today is not the day to regale you with the details. Nor the year. Perhaps in 2015 you will know the extent of the full circus.

For now, let us not go there. Imran Khan is celebrating. He’ll probably get married soon. Seeds of change he has sown today will bear ugly painful thorns soon. Painful for him, mind you, not just us. But where does he go from here? A return to the good profitable cricket commentating days? Bu...

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) issued notices to the principal secretary of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) governor and FATA secretary planning and development for failing to abide by a court order suspending a freeze on development projects.

A division bench of Justice Malik Manzoor Hussain and Justice Ikramullah Khan was hearing a contempt of court application filed by Mastu Khan through his counsel Aminur Rehman.

Rehman told the bench former governor Shaukatullah Khan had started several development projects for seven agencies and six frontier regions.

These were suspended by his successor Sardar Mehtab Abbasi. Rehman pointed out the latter divided projects into five categories according to funds already utilised.

A division bench of Chief Justice Mazhar Al...

We’ve reached a point in time where education is thought to be the panacea for all our misfortunes. Education is elevated to the extent of a counter-ideology within itself, almost — symbolically combating extremism. At least that is how it’s perceived generally. But there is little said and almost nothing done when educators and their institutes are targeted in the conflict-ridden areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).

The recent incident where three female teachers in Bajaur Agency were killed along with six other passers-by in a bomb explosion is not an isolated incident where teachers have been targeted. The streak of violence targeting teachers in K-P and Fata is not a recent phenomenon. Many are reluctant to continue their ...

The Pakistan Army’s integrated operation Zarb-e-Azb, with its usual Islamised nomenclature, has been underway in North Waziristan now for almost two months. A vague and confusing situation is created in the country whereby the tribal area is represented as a haven of militants and the tribal people as beasts who gave shelter to the militants. An effective process of isolation of the tribal areas has created a situation whereby the tribal people are represented as one “militant group” — either as active militants or as supporters indicted to be punished — and this has gone largely unchallenged. What is striking is the lack of basic information about Fata in Pakistan’s public sphere.

Let us take a seemingly minor but very telling example: population in the North Wazirist...

After 72.6% of the year’s polio cases were reported from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas Fata), Governor Mehtab Khan has added to the pressure by directing political agents of all agencies and frontier regions (FR) to vaccinate each and every child. According to documents available with The Express Tribune, the option to inoculate those children who are still living in North Waziristan is still on the table, provided the Civil Military Coordination Committee (CMCC) can find a plausible security plan and method.
